European Roulette
When
you play roulette at an online or land casino, the casino will usually
offer either American roulette or
'European Roulette' (also called French Roulette). The difference between
the two versions lies in the roulette
wheel layout. European roulette has thirty-seven numbered slots including
one for the number zero, while the American roulette wheel has thirty-eight
numbered slots including two for the number zero (0 and 00).
The European roulette wheel has 36 numbers, and only the single zero,
unlike the American roulette wheel which also has the numbers 1 to 36
but with two zeros (0 and 00). That aside, European roulette is very similar
to American roulette. The numbers on the roulette wheel alternate pairs
of odd numbers with pairs of even numbers. The numbers also alternate
between black and red. Both the 0 and 00 slots are green in color.
European roulette is definitely the way to go. You might think that the
extra zero on an American roulette wheel doesn't make a big difference,
but the house edge for American roulette (5.26%) is almost twice as high
as the house edge for European roulette (2.7%). Thus, we definitely recommend
that you always try to play European roulette, or better yet, find a casino
that offers European roulette as well as the "la partage" rule.
With this rule, players lose only half the bet on outside bets if the
ball lands on zero, resulting in an even lower house edge of 1.35%. Unfortunately
for us players (but very logically for the casino owners), very few casinos
over the "la partage" rule.
